Reconciling Ministries Sunday Set for May 25 at Epworth with “defrocked” Pastor Frank Schaefer

01Frank Schaefer and his wife Brigitte, will visit Berkeley on May 23-25, hosted by Epworth
UMC for the Memorial Day Weekend.

On Sunday, May 25, Frank will preach and preside at Table (celebrate communion) at our 10am Worship service. Following the service, in Adult Study at 11:45pm,

Frank will share the “back story” of how he had to choose whether to obey his Denomination’s rules or violate them for conscience sake in order to love and affirm his gay son and partner.

“A Father’s Love” is the title of his new book about his journey from quiet support for gay
marriage to bolder activism for full inclusion of LGBTQ members in the Church of Jesus Christ.

02“Epworth is unashamedly Methodist and unapologetically inclusive of LGBTQ children of
God,” states Pastor Michael Christensen in response to why he invited a defrocked
Methodist minister to preach at Epworth, and why Epworth UMC “welcomes all people on
their journey of faith regardless of age, physical condition, race, gender, power, privilege, sexual orientation, class or culture, and supports each other in our ministries to one another, the community and the world.” (Reconciling Statement of Epworth UMC)

“All means All,” adds associate pastor Brian Adkins, stating that Epworth has been a Reconciling Congregation since 1995. “This means there is a place at the table for All God’s Children, no exclusion whatsoever…”
